Now it would be even better manners on my part if I didn't keep the winner waiting for the announcement, don't you think? Read on and we'll see.
When I was a girl, today was celebrated as May Day, roughly coincident with the start of Spring. The pagan name for this celebration is Beltane - this means holy, or lucky, fire. Throughout Europe, fires, and bonfires in particular, are associated with celebrations throughout the year, such as les Feux de la St Jean (midsummer day, in France). The weather was normally warm and sunny, perfect for maypole dancing or bonfires. Today, May Day is met with flood warnings and weather that is not conducive to burning a wicker man; although these warnings follow recent announcements of water shortages (at least in SE England) and hosepipe bans. Strange times we live in.
Anyway, back to National Good Manners day. I thought I'd share a couple of posts that I found online today. First, Ruth Slavin's post on good manners and the built environment & then here's a thank you to someone for brightening the day a little.
Am I going to be well mannered enough to make the blog winner announcement today? Maybe, but not in this post.. watch this space!
